Retraction and expansion of the masts, can easily be done with gears, motors, and by microcontrollers. So they can all be automatic, and be controlled by a single person.

So can the anchor that is to be dropped.

And directional changes, is a matter of creating something that repels the water in its contact,
by shaping it in an angle. Though I learned this from the book, "Kontiki" where people

who migrated to Polynesia used a vertically placed log, which was cut to an angle, and
dropped directly to the waters and in combination with the friction of the water,
and current changing once it hits the angular log, it changes direction.

But other forms of mechanical shapes and in some distance from where it is placed,
can be altered. Not everything requires electricity as well. This can be mechanical.

And people may think controlling the ship may be complicated and costly to make,

but hardly. The most expensive components will be the motors and the battery.
