If there's a type of resin that becomes like plastic/glass when it cures, as a coating on the ship,

unaffected by the water and requires little maintenance over temperature,

and some changes by the wood (maybe it contracts over time, getting smaller, who knows)

then coating without metal could be better.

 

But the ship will need to be flipped to apply the coating, or lifted.
