to be clear, descending compartment to the ground,
it needs not drag to the ground. or even reach the ground.
it descends to create a hollow space for the front
compartment that is on contact with the other vehicle,
to collapse towards the ground, at an angle.
to create a mechanical bias towards this angle
is the question.
if series of 'hooks' as i've drawn before,
in closer layers, may pull the entire structure
towards that angle if connected correctly.
but front compartment is the space for the engines,
so, how much hollow space is needed,
and how to mechanically create that bias is the question.
on hitting the sensor, at the very front,
separation to descend down instantly, perhaps.
but that may be too slow. (working with sensors)
so mechanical inclination towards that hollow space
is the way to go.
