It can, but the judge can overrule a guilty verdict. If it is so poorly, supported that no rational jury could so find. There’s only applies to guilty verdict. Acquittals are bulletproof, also judge proof, and, taking the case away from the jury is called judgment, notwithstanding the verdict, JNOV in Latin in English. In federal court, it’s called judgment as a matter of law. Doesn’t only apply in criminal cases.
