It was simply,

 

attempted defamation which failed.

 

Some of which is lasting damage.

 

 

 

And if for some reason,

 

that particular abuse is dismissed as an heroic act

after all the wrong that he did,

after all the harassment and abuse,

(which has no justification for)

 

 

then that would be very wrong.
